Real Wood Flooring

H1
A3 · INTRO

Nothing matches the warmth, character and underfoot comfort of an authentic wooden floor - and with each plank being different, you know you're getting something uniquely yours. From traditional solid wood to versatile engineered wood, the right real wood floor adds lasting value to your home.

Real wood flooring is made from genuine timber, so no two boards are exactly alike. It comes in two types: solid wood, cut from a single piece of hardwood and able to be sanded back for decades; and engineered wood, a real hardwood top layer over a stable core that copes better with underfloor heating and changes in humidity.

Oak is the most popular choice and the wood we stock most of, available in both solid and engineered ranges and finished either oiled for a natural matt look or lacquered for an easy-clean sheen. Whatever the room, a real wood floor brings warmth, character and lasting value to your home.

Common Questions

Real wood flooring FAQs

What is the difference between solid and engineered real wood flooring?
Solid wood is cut from a single piece of hardwood and can be sanded back many times. Engineered wood has a real hardwood top layer over a plywood core, which makes it more stable and better suited to underfloor heating and rooms that see changes in humidity.
Can I install real wood flooring over underfloor heating?
Yes - most real wood works with underfloor heating. Use engineered wood for the best results, as its layered construction handles temperature changes without warping.
Which finish is better: oiled or lacquered?
Neither is better, it depends on the look you want. Lacquered gives a hard, easy-clean sheen that suits busy homes; oiled gives a natural matt surface that feels warm underfoot and is easy to patch-repair if it scuffs.
Why is oak the most popular wood for flooring?
Oak is hard-wearing, takes a wide range of finishes and suits almost any room, which is why it is the most popular wood for flooring. It is available as both solid and engineered.
Are real wood floors suitable for kitchens?
Yes. Engineered wood is the safest choice for a kitchen, as its layered construction copes with humidity and temperature changes without warping. Wipe up spills promptly and it will last for years.
Can real wood flooring be refinished?
Both solid and engineered wood can be sanded and refinished to look like new. Solid wood can go through more refinishing cycles than engineered.
